Hearn Academy – A Ball Charter School Review

Hearn Academy – A Ball Charter School opened in 1996 and provides an alternative to public education for students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school is known for providing students with the skills they need to become productive members of society as well as being prepared for middle school. Along with core subjects the school offers computer arts, dance, and chorus as well as sports including sports volleyball, cheerleading, physical education classes, basketball, soccer, and football. The student clubs available include student government, yearbook, and science & technology.

The reviews of Hearn Academy are very mixed with some parents praising the school, teachers and staff, while there are quite a few others than are very upset with some of the staff and especially the administration. Bullying seems to be a huge problem that is not being addressed by school staff and when addressed by parents, students are placed together with their bullies to work out their differences. No discipline for students that are disruptive or bullying others.

On the other hand, you will find parents that love the school and the teachers but are not fond of the administration. The express their children are excelling and learning in a caring environment as long as they do not have to deal with the staff in the office.

When it comes to the AIMS testing, the percentages of students that passed or exceeded the exam were overall better than state averages. Third grades were higher than state averages in reading and math and only 2% lower in writing. All other grades tested showed higher percentages than the state averages in all courses.

It seems like the school is doing a good job of teaching students the basics and preparing them for higher learning, however; with the parents concerns it would be best if you talk with staff and other parents before enrolling your child if you have any worries.
