Harriet Tubman Village Charter School Review

Harriet Tubman Village Charter School opened in 1994 for grades Kindergarten through 8th. It takes a village to raise a child and the school approaches education this way. The curriculum is Waldorf-inspired curriculum focused on students as an individual rather than a whole. The process is very customized.

Freedom to learn is what this school is all about. The core subjects are very important to the overall learning and there are a variety of other programs to keep students busy as well. Those include band, drawing, painting, drama, Spanish, technology, yearbook, community service, student government and academic contests. Athletics available are football, soccer, volleyball, yoga, tack, basketball and cheerleading.

Reviews for Harriet Tubman Village Charter School are quite mixed. Parents have referred to the school as ghetto with inexperienced teachers. Other parents love the teachers; like that the curriculum is children oriented and are sad that the school does not go past the 8th grade point.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase in academic growth from 797 to 816 to much delight from parents. The state average for California schools is set at 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The test results showed a mixture of highs and lows. For example on the 4th grade Math exam 97% of students passed with the state average at 71%. For grade 8 49% of students passed the Science exam. The state average was 66%.

Harriet Tubman Village Charter School prides the school as being focused on the child and their full potential. With the mixed comments, you may wish to talk with parents that have students enrolled.
