Harmony Magnet Academy Review

Harmony Magnet Academy opened in 2008 for grades 9 through 12th. Harmony is dedicated to their college prep curriculum with a strong focus on engineering or the performing arts. They strive for each student to reach their highest potential while following on a rigorous curriculum.

The core subjects are very important to the success achieved at Harmony. Electives are chosen based on which field, either arts or engineering that the student is interested in. For the arts, there are dance elements, orchestra, music keyboarding, graphic arts and the fundamentals of guitar. For engineering, there is digital electronics, aerospace, biotechnical and civil engineering courses.

Parents are impressed with what is offered, but there are some minor problems at Harmony Magnet Academy. Some of the teachers are new to the field that they are teaching, however they are cited as being very helpful and caring by the students. The engineering classes seem to get better equipment as compared to the arts program.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase in academic growth from 871 to 882. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The test results showed great numbers across each grade. The passing percentages were quite high as compared to the state average. On the Biology/Life Sciences exam 100% of 11th graders passed. The state average was 53%.

The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) is used to challenge 10th grade high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. Here the students once again excelled. 99% passed on the Math exam with the state at 84% and 96% passed the English exam with the state at 83%.

The test scores at Harmony Magnet Academy are quite impressive and parents could not be more pleased. If you would like to know more take a tour of the school and meet with the teachers one on one.
