Granada Hills Charter High School Review

Granada Hills Charter High School opened in 2003 for students in grades 9th through 12th. Their focus of the school is to prepare students academically for college and for their career upon graduation. The academic program is challenging and rigorous preparing each student for the real world.

The core curriculum here is a vast array of subjects that can lead to healthy careers in the workforce. From technology to business to humanities there is something for every student. What’s offered at Granada Hills is clubs, band, dance, after school programs, college center and an extensive athletics program.

The reviews are mixed for this charter school. Some students do not like the teachers while others love the athletics and extracurricular activities. Parent reviews are just as mixed. They can appreciate high test scores and great programs, but the school is too big with too many students. Most complain that the school states they have small class sizes when in all actuality the school does not.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase from 877 to 878. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

Test scores proved what the reviews said. 74% of 9th graders passed the Algebra I exam compared to the state average of 69%. For the 10th grade Science exam 74% passed and the average was 53%. 11th grade US History passed at 80% with the state average at 48%.

The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) is used to test high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the math exam was 95% with the state average at average 84%, while 92% passed the English exam with the state average at 83%.

Granada Hills Charter High School is great for high-test scores and a challenging curriculum. It would still be a good idea to talk with other parents that have students enrolled to ensure the school is a good fit for your child.
