Golden Valley Charter School – Ventura Review

Golden Valley Charter School in Ventura opened in 2001 for grades Kindergarten through 12th. The curriculum is based upon the individual with learning administered through home-based learning, school programs and classes, apprenticeships, community-based learning and distance learning. With different types of learning available, there is a program for every student.

All Golden Valley students are taught in their own homes or at approved places in each student’s community. They focus on education that utilizes parents as a major contributing factor in each child’s success.

Parents love that they have the opportunity to be so involved in their child’s education and success. The core subjects are of course a main part of the curriculum but each family gets an education specialist that can bring in even more of a variety of classes like Shakespeare and geology. Some parents, however, do feel lost in locating materials for their children. Most students expressed they really enjoy going to school at home, but like to see other activities where they can meet their kids of their own age.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase from 808 to 817. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. In 2nd grade, the results were consistent. On the English Language Arts exam 53% passed against the state’s 58% while the math results were right on target at 64%. For 11th graders they were at 46% for the US History exam while the state was 48%.

Each year students in the 10th grade are challenged in English Language Arts and math to test their skills in the California High School Exit Exam. At this school 95% passed in English with the state at 83% and 91% in math with the state at 84%.
