Fenton Avenue Charter School Review

Fenton Avenue Charter School opened in 1994 to provide families in the Lake View Terrace area with a school that caters to the community serving 3rd through 5th grades. The school curriculum is based on California standards while providing small group directed methods to ensure students have the personal attention they need to succeed. The student body is diverse with 89% Hispanic or Latino, 8% African American, 1% Filipino, 1% White, 1% Asian, 1% American Indian, and 1% unspecified.

Along with core subjects, Fenton Avenue Charter School provides extra curricular activities such as dance, chorus, and computer arts. The only sport offered is football. Other programs include student council and academic contests.

Many parents stated they love the family involvement. The school encourages parents to be involved in the education of their children, which makes the school have a nice community feel. The majority of parents expressed their children are doing very well. Students said they like going to school and their teachers. The only negative remarks were due to the lack of extra curricular activities and sports.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 805 to 815. The goal statewide is a score of 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Fenton Avenue Charter School was mixed with some below and others above average. Examples include 38% of 3rd grades passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average being 48% and 76% of 4th graders passed the math exam with the state average at 71%,

Fenton Avenue Charter School is providing the community with a wonderful alternative to traditional schools where students are encouraged to do their best. To learn if the school environment is best for your child, you should take a tour of the school.
