FAME Public Charter School Review

FAME Public Charter School opened in 2002 as an alternative to provide an education for multi cultural and multi lingual students. The school offers a resource center as well as tutoring in core subjects along with field trips every month. The school serves students in kindergarten through 12th grades with individual attention along with personal instruction to fit the needs of each student. The student population is diverse with 31% Asian, 28% White, 9% African American, 5% Hispanic or Latino, 1% Pacific Islander, 1% Filipino, 1% American Indian, and 24% unspecified.

Along with core subjects, FAME Public Charter School offers extra curricular activities for students that wish to participate including painting, chorus, and video production. Languages offered are French, Latin, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, and Mandarin. Sports available include basketball, martial arts, wrestling, rock climbing, soccer, football, fencing, gymnastics, physical education classes, swimming, and volleyball. Other programs include yearbook, community service, and student council.

The majority of comments from parents were negative with parents stating they were not happy with teachers, staff, or administration. A few parents did state that their children were doing well in some courses, but in other courses, teachers were not as helpful. Students mentioned about the same – like some teachers and not liking others.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at FAME Public Charter School was above and below state averages according to the grade level and subject matter. Examples include 77% of 4th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the average being 67%, 58% of 5th graders passed the science exam with the average at 60%, and 60% of 7th graders passed the math exam with the average at 52%.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English Language Arts exam was 81% with the average at 83% and in math 74% with the state average at 84%.

With the comments of the parents and students, it would be a good idea to take a tour of the school and talk with other parents that have students enrolled prior to enrolling your child.
