EV Cain 21st Century STEM Charter Review

EV Cain 21st Century STEM Charter opened in 2010 to provide middle school students in grades 6th through 8th grades with an alternative to the traditional school setting. The school offers small class sizes and more personal attention to help students prepare for high school.

Along with core subjects, EV Cain 21st Century STEM Charter offers extra curricular activities for students that wish to participate including theater, painting, dance, computer arts, and band. Sports offered include volleyball, wrestling, track, softball, soccer, physical education classes, football, baseball, cross country, bicycling, badminton, and basketball. Other programs available include yearbook, academic contests, student government, and science & technology.

The majority of parents stated the school and teachers are doing an excellent job of working with students on a personal level and helping them prepare for high school. Students expressed they are learning better than they did in elementary school. Other parents stated the school is not monitoring the student body as much as they should and there are problems below the surface.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 823 to 824. The goal statewide is a score of 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at EV Cain 21st Century STEM Charter was mixed, with most above average. Examples of the percentage of students passing the exams include 69% of 7th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 62% and 50% of 8th graders passed the Algebra I exam with the state average at 49%.

EV Cain 21st Century STEM Charter is providing students with a quality education. For those that are concerned about the learning environment, it would be a good idea to talk with parents that have students enrolled.
