College-Ready Academy High School #5 Review


College-Ready Academy High School #5 is part of the Alliance College-Ready Public Schools. This is the largest nonprofit charter organization in Los Angeles. This campus opened in 2006 and serves students in 9th through 12th grades. The school serves low-income students and provides a standards based college preparatory curriculum to help students prepare for college. The network of schools has both middle schools and high schools throughout the Los Angeles area.

College-Ready Academy High School #5 creates a personalized learning environment via a meeting between the teacher, student, and parents to ensure the student will be able to excel. The class size is small providing a family feel as well which encourages students to do their best. The Alliance College-Ready Public Schools student body is comprised of 87% are Latino and 13% are African American with 22% being English-Language Learners.

Along with core subjects, College-Ready Academy High School #5 offers extra curricular activities, which include drama, photography, drawing, dance, film production, and computer arts. Sports available include basketball, soccer, cheerleading, and soccer. Other programs offered include yearbook, community service, multimedia, and student government.

Students expressed how thankful they are to College-Ready Academy High School #5 as well as the teachers that took an interest in them graduating high school and then going on to college. Students stated that they were not doing well in school, until they came here and then they started doing much better and were encouraged to do their best. Parents are very happy with the way in which their children are progressing and enjoying going to school.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from 774 to 765. The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams were mainly below state averages except for courses including science and history were the percentages were above average.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students at the school that passed the exams was 84% in English Language Arts and 91% in math both being above state averages.

The Alliance College-Ready Public Schools overall since their beginning in 2004 have seen 96% of their seniors graduate with 99% of entering college.

The school is providing a very good education that prepares students for colleges, universities, and to become productive members of their community.
