Coastal Grove Charter School opened in 2002 serving students in kindergarten through 8th grades in Arcata and the surrounding areas. The school provides an excellent curriculum that integrates natural developmental rhythms that enhance creativity, imagination, social responsibility, and academic excellence. The curriculum is centered on diverse cultural backgrounds and learning styles. The one on one attention that each student receives aids in working with the whole child.

Along with core subjects, Coastal Grove Charter School offers band, drama, painting, and ceramics. Sports offered include cheerleading, basketball, physical education classes, and yoga. Other programs available are community service, science & technology, and yearbook.

Most parents are truly pleased with the Waldorf method that is being integrated into the structure of the school. Parents expressed the extra activities not often mentioned that make the school exceptional are programs like Spanish and violin. Students said they love their teachers and like going to school. The lunch program is another excellent feature as explained by some parents, which offers always all organic foods.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 808 to 841. The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams range from below average to above average according to the grade level and the course. Examples are 2nd grade English Language Arts 25% and 7th grade math 68%.
