Children First Academy – Tempe Campus Review

Children First Academy opened their Tempe campus in 2008 to provide an education to underprivileged and often homeless children. The average enrollment is 175 students in grades kindergarten through 8th.

In the majority of cases, close to half of the student body is homeless, living in hotels, or families living together in one home. All families the school serves are at the poverty level.

Children First Academy works with the whole child to ensure all their needs are met not only academically but socially as well. The school strives to give the care and attention the students need while encouraging students to become productive members of society.

Parents are happy that there is a school in the area that caters to their children’s needs. Some stated that their children are often ones that drop through the cracks due to the family’s financial situation and they are very pleased that one school notices the need and furnishes such a caring and nurturing learning environment.

Children First Academy participated in the AIMS exam which measures students mastering ability in core subjects. The percentages of students that passed or exceeded the exam along with state averages are listed below.

In reading, 34% of 3rd graders passed or exceeded the exam with the state average at 76% and in math 17% with the state at 68%.

In reading, 47% of 4th graders passed or exceeded the exam with the state at 75%, in science 26% with the state at 60%, and in math 26% with the state at 65%.
