Charter School of San Diego Review

Charter School of San Diego opened in 1994 to serve students in 7th through 12th grades with an alternative to traditional school settings. The school provides students with an accelerated or credit recovery curriculum to ensure their success. Charter School of San Diego offers a safe, small group setting with personalized curriculum. The instructional design is very different from traditional school offering a university model where students work independently, attend labs, classes, and tutorials 2 to 5 times per week. Classrooms are open 7am until 7pm while students come at their scheduled time with no more than 20 students present for the class.

Along with core subjects, Charter School of San Diego offers extra curricular activities including film production, computer arts, photography, and community service.

Parents and students both expressed their delight with the school and the teachers. A few teachers have remarked all the faults they see with the school, however, none of these is mentioned by parents. Parents stated that the school has been a blessing for their children and they are learning and enjoying going to school. Some students stated they would like to see more extra curricular activities, sports, and clubs but other than that, they really enjoy attending the school.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 627 to 647. The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. Even though the API showed academic growth, across all grade levels and all courses, the percentage of students at Charter School of San Diego passing the exams were below average. A few examples include 7th grade math 8% with state average at 52%, 8th grade history 29% with the state at 52%, 9th grade algebra I 0% with the state at 25%.

It would be a good idea to take a tour of the school, learn more about the curriculum, and talk with other parents that have students attending the school before enrolling your child.
