Carter G. Woodson Public Charter School Review

Carter G. Woodson Public Charter School opened in 2001 to provide an alternative to traditional schools for students in 7th through 12th grades. The curriculum offered meets California standards but offers a technology focus. Along with small class size and one on one attention the school has a family atmosphere with independent studies program and flexible scheduling to ensure the success of every student.

The school does not offer any type of extra curricular activities, sports, or student clubs.

Some parents expressed that the lack of extra curricular activities is a huge disappointment. The curriculum and attention from teachers is quality and the environment is one that focuses on family. Parents are not as involved as some parents would like to see. Students expressed that they like their teachers but would like to see more sports and clubs. On the other hand, some parents were not as impressed with the school but still agree that it provides a better education that can be found at a traditional school.

The Academic Performance Index shows Carter G. Woodson Public Charter School declined in academic performance from 508 to 470. The school has not published any of the results of the California Standards Tests however, previous years showed the school below average across all grades and all courses. The California High School Exit Exam given to 10th graders to measure their skills in math and English showed students were below state averages in both subjects. In English the percentage of students that passed the exam was 40% while the state average was at 83% while in math 31% passed the exam with the state average at 84%.

With the comments of parents and students as well as the lack of test scores it would be in your best interest to learn more about the curriculum and talk with other parents that have students attending the school before you make your decision to enroll your child.
