California Virtual Academy @ Sutter Review

California Virtual Academy opened the Kings campus in Simi Valley in 2006. The school is a tuition free public charter school for students in kindergarten through 12th grades. The school offers students the opportunity to learn at home via their online school while providing all materials sent directly to their home.

The curriculum for kindergarten through 8th grade includes English, math, science, history, world languages, art, and music. The high school curriculum includes core subjects that you find at all high schools but with added courses, which include comprehensive courses, honors courses, and advanced placement.

Along with core subjects, the school offers computer arts, band, dance, painting, and drama. The languages taught include German, Mandarin, French, and Spanish. No sports are available at the Sutter campus. Other programs include science & technology, community service, and academic contests.

Parents expressed they love the curriculum and the way their children can learn at their own pace. The teachers have always been very supportive and help students when they get stuck on any subject. Students really expressed how much they love the school and the freedom they have when it comes to when they must attend school. The only complaint from parents is that the students do not have enough interaction with other students. Some students expressed they would like to see some sports offered such as basketball or track.

The Academic Performance Index showed a small increase in academic growth from 699 to 704.

Students that passed the California Standards Tests were below state averages across all courses and all grade levels except for 10th grade English that was 3% above average. Tenth graders that passed the California High School Exit Exam were 88% in English with the state average at 83% and in math 80% with the state average at 84%.

The school is an online school and it can be difficult for student to work independently at home. However, some students excel while others would do better in a classroom with other students. In order to make this decision, you will have to decide if your child can excel or fall behind before enrolling.
