California Virtual Academy opened the Sonoma campus in Simi Valley in 2004. The school is a tuition free public charter school serving students in an online school for students in kindergarten through 12th grades. All materials needed are delivered to the student’s home, which includes all books, CD’s, and even science experiment materials.

The curriculum for kindergarten through 8th grade includes English, math, science, history, world languages, art, and music. The high school curriculum offers core subjects that you would find at other high schools, along with comprehensive courses, honors courses, and advanced placement.

Along with core subjects, the school offers computer arts, band, film production, photography, painting, and sculpture. The languages taught include Mandarin, French, Latin, and Spanish. There are no sports available at this campus. Other programs include science & technology, community service, newspaper, and academic contests.

Parents express that this is the best program for families that wish to home school their children. The teachers and staff are very supportive and the curriculum is challenging. Students enjoy learning at home and having their parents as their main teacher when help is needed. Other students explained that the teachers are awesome. The only downside is that students stated they would like to have sports to join so they could make more friends.

The Academic Performance Index showed a small increase in academic growth from 723 to 727.

Students that passed the California Standards Tests were above average and below average according to the grade level and the subjects. Tenth graders that passed the California High School Exit Exam were 86% in English with the state average at 83% and in math 80% with the state average at 84%.

Since it is a virtual school, a student must be able work on their own and be a self starter. Students that spend the time doing their work will in most instances succeed, which can be difficult if students are distracted in their home environment.
