California Virtual Academy @ Los Angeles Review

California Virtual Academy opened the Los Angeles campus in Simi Valley in 2006. The school is a tuition free public charter school that offers a virtual education where students can attend school at home via computers. All materials needed are provided by the school and delivered to their home, which includes books, CD’s, and even rocks or other material. The school serves students in kindergarten through 12th grades.

The curriculum for kindergarten through 8th grade includes core subjects including English, math, science, history, world languages, art, and music. The high school curriculum includes core subjects that are close to the standard courses set by the state of California along with comprehensive courses, honors courses, and advanced placement.

The school does not offer any extracurricular activities or sports. The languages taught include German, French, and Spanish. Other programs include science & technology, community service, newspaper, yearbook, and academic contests.

Parents of the lower grades stated the school is excellent and that their children are excelling. They explained their children do not become bored and are very excited to attend school every day. Students in the upper grades are very happy with the way they can learn at home and still have time for an active social life. The only complaint from both parents and students was the lack of extra curricular activities and sports. Some students would really enjoy joining a sports team and meeting more of the students.

The Academic Performance Index showed a small decrease in academic growth from 749 to 739.

California Standards Tests are given to students in 2nd through 11th grades. 2nd through 11th grades are tested in English Language Arts; 2nd through 7th are tested in math; the science test is given to 5th, 8th, and 10th graders while history is given to 8th and 11th grades. The tests are given to learn if students are mastering the core subjects, which is compared to other students across the state. 7th graders were above average in English, 9th grade were above in general math, earth science, and English, 10th graders were above average in English, and 11th graders were above average in English. All of the rest of the percentages were below average in all courses and across all grades. 10th graders are also given the California High School Exit Exam for math and English language arts. the percentage of students that passed the exams at the Los Angeles campus was above average in English and below average in math.

With the majority of percentages below average, it would be in your best interest to learn more about the curriculum and the support families receive before enrolling in your child in the school.
