California Virtual Academy opened the Jamestown campus in Simi Valley in 2002. The school is a tuition free public charter school that is accessed as an online school but does provide traditional methods. All materials needed are delivered to the home of the student, which includes CD’s, books, and more. The school serves students in kindergarten through 12th grades.

The curriculum for kindergarten through 8th grade includes English, math, science, history, world languages, art, and music. The high school curriculum includes core courses that are close to the standard courses seen in other programs, along with comprehensive courses, honors courses, and advanced placement.

The school does not offer any extra curricular activities or sports. The school does offer other programs, which include yearbook, student council, and newspaper.

Parents are very pleased with the virtual school that offers the support students need to succeed. Students are very happy with the school as they can choose to go to study that works best with their own personal style of learning. Teachers and staff are very supportive and the curriculum is very challenging that makes students do their best. Other parents and students alike expressed that the school needs more extra curricular activities.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline from 723 to 683.

From kindergarten through 10th grades, the percentage of students that passed the California Standards Tests were below state averages. However, 11th graders were above average in US History and English Language Arts, with other courses not reported. the California High School Exit Exam showed 86% percent of 10th graders passed English with the state average at 83% and 70% passing math with the state average at 84%.

Since it is a virtual school, it would be best to decide if your child will be a self-starter and work independently in order to do their schoolwork.
