California Montessori Project – Shingle Springs Campus Review

California Montessori Project opened their Shingle Springs Campus in 2001. The school serves just under 400 students in kindergarten through 8th grades using a Montessori curriculum. The charter school is part of the California Montessori Project that works with parents and teachers to provide an alternative to traditional schools, which ensures the success of the whole child. The network of schools serves students through six campuses in the Elk Grove Unified School District. Students that attend the Shingle Springs Campus are motivated to do their best while becoming life long learners, independent thinkers that can work independently or in groups.

Along with core subjects, the students at the Shingle Springs Campus can join extra curricular activities such as drama, band, computer arts, dance, and drawing. Languages taught at the school include French, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, and Mandarin. Sports offered include yoga, track, physical education classes, and cross-country. Other programs offered are community service, science & technology, and yearbook.

Parents stated the school is a great learning environment where students learn to enjoy school and truly become life long learners. Parents are impressed with the way their children are growing while working both independently and in groups. The school does not tolerate bullying but focuses on character building which in the opinion of most parents is awesome. Students expressed they enjoy learning and the field trips are great.

According to the Academic Performance Index, the school had a small decline in their growth performance from 890 to 889. On the other hand, the percentage of students passing the California Standards Tests was above average in most courses across all grade levels. The only courses that were a bit below average were math.

The school is doing a good job of providing a quality education for students as shown by the exams. It would still be a good idea to learn more about the Montessori Method as this style of teaching is quite a bit different from traditional school settings.
