Bennett Academy Review

Bennett Academy opened their charter school in 1995 for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school has an average of 140 students enrolled each year. The curriculum offered is college preparatory that not only focuses on academics, but also so character and behavior as well.

Along with core subjects, Bennett Academy also offers extra curricular activities including theater, computer arts, yearbook, academic contests, and student government. Sports available for students include football, cheerleading, basketball, physical education classes, volleyball, and soccer.

It seems over the last few years the school has started receiving a few negative reviews from parents. Parents that had students attending the school previously were very pleased with the staff and teachers, but with a new principal in place, the thoughts are not the same. It seems there are discipline issues than before which is a sign as parents have noted is from a weak administration. The classrooms seem to have students that are not behaving thus causing problems for students that wish to learn. On the other hand, there are classrooms where students are excelling in all subjects. The good news is that disruptive behavior and bullying is given attention at once with the students being sent to the office. The staff and teachers are working diligently to overcome the issues of some students while ensuring students can and will achieve their goals.

The Bennett Academy students participated in the AIMS exam, which is required in the state of Arizona for all students attending public schools. The exam measures students that are passing or exceeding the standards set forth by the state. The percentages of students that passed or exceeded the exam along with the percentages of students across the state that passed or exceeded the exam are listed below.

In reading, 67% of 3rd graders with the state average at 76%, in writing 85% with the state at 79%, and in math 83% with the state at 68%.
