ASA Learning Center Charter School Review

ASA Learning Center Charter School opened in 2004 for students to have an alternative to traditional schools settings for students in kindergarten through 12th grades. The curriculum focuses on reading, oral communication, written communication, computation, and technology.

The school provides a structured learning environment in a safe community that does not tolerate inappropriate behavior including bullying. Students learn through freedom and creativity while exploring materials on their own as well as learn to work with others. Students learn in both individualized and group settings. In the upper grade levels, students are also allowed to work on project-based learning.

Along with core subjects, ASA Learning Center Charter School also offers drama as the only extra curricular activity.

Parent’s state that the school provides an excellent education and teachers treat all students with respect and dignity, which is another advantage. Students enjoy attending school and most are doing better than they were when attending traditional schools. However, there is some concern recently when a new principal was hired. On the other hand, many parents explained that a few things are changing which is expected when new staff is put into place. One of the major complaints is that ASA Learning Center Charter School does not offer any extra curricular activities besides drama. Students and parents alike would like to see more extra curricular activities, sports, and student clubs.

The Academic Performance Index showed the school had some improvement in their academic performance over the previous year even though the California Standards Tests across all grade levels and all courses were below average.

Since a few parents are concerned and the tests scores were a bit below average, you may want to learn more about your curriculum and talk with teachers to discover more about the learning environment. The best thing to remember is that you find a school that fits the needs of your child while ensuring your family is comfortable with the decision.
