ARISE High School Review

ARISE High School opened in 2005 for students in Oakland in grades 9th through 12th grades to have an alternative to traditional schools. The charter high school provides students with a curriculum that will ensure they are prepared for their college years or for joining the workforce upon graduation. The school offers small class size where students can receive the personal attention they need to succeed.

The college prep curriculum ensures that students met the requirements to enter the University of California or California State University system. Students in upper grades will also be taking two college courses, which provide students with receiving college credits while still attending high school.

Along with core subjects, Arise High School provides extra curricular activities, which include drawing, drama, photography, dance, and film production. The only sport offered is soccer while there are other programs available such as yearbook, student government and science and technology. The vocational program available is food service, production and management.

Most parents are happy with the relaxed atmosphere of the school where students can feel more at home instead of being in a structured facility. However, the school is very safe and does not tolerate bullying, but is quite a bit more relaxed with classes being stopped so students can attend other activities in the school. The teachers are caring and help students with any issues that may arise as well as create a fun learning environment instead of boring classroom.

Students at Arise High School did not do well in any of the testing formats including the California Standards Tests and the California High School Exit Exam with all grades and all courses being below state averages.

In order to make a wise decision if the school is right for your child you should take a tour, learn more about the curriculum, and talk with other parents that have students attending the school. Even though the tests results were below average, 60% of students passed the English Language Arts California High School Exit Exam.
