American River Charter opened in 2010 for students in kindergarten through 12th grades to serve the community of Garden Valley. The school has small class sizes with an average enrollment of 175 students per year. The school uses a curriculum that is based on project based instruction as well as home schooling and the Waldorf curriculum.

The American River Charter offers new unique programs, which include a site based, and a home school program. The site-based program serves students with a project based thematic instruction. The school works with the whole child, which not only includes academics but also focuses on life skills for character growth as well as reflection, literacy, the arts, and teamwork.

The home school program offers families a wide array of educational options, which includes a few site-based classes. These classes include vocational education, performing arts, visual arts, and science to name a few. With the home school program, teachers provide home visits as well as small group instruction and extra curricular activities.
