American Indian Public Charter School II Review

American Indian Public Charter School II opened in 2008 for students in middle school grades 6th through 8th. The school offers small class sizes with only just over 250 students enrolled per year.

The school centers on core subjects with classrooms being self contained so students have more time to stay focused on the schoolwork.

The American Indian Public Charter School system works with 250 inner-city students in sixth through eighth grade. The school centers on ensuring that American Indian students have the educational tools needed to reach their goals. Attendance is very important and is one of the main focus points that are instilled in students to help them succeed. The curriculum is created to enhance academic skills in spelling, writing, reading, social science, math, humanities, and business to help students become productive members of their communities and society as a whole.

Along with core subjects, the school also offers sports including yoga, track, and physical education classes. There are no extra curricular activities or student clubs available.

Most parents expressed that students are doing very well with the exams. A few parents explained the school has a high turnover rate of teachers and would like to see more teachers staying than only staying a short time and then leaving. Students enjoy going to school and state the school is strict but they feel safe. Students are placed with one teacher and are with the same teacher for three to four years as explained by students, which helps create a family style environment. Students that were a bit shy said that teachers and staff really helped them learn how to become involved and do very well in school. The majority of parents like the school and said that teachers are very supportive and helpful, even with students that are behind in courses.

If you look at the results of the California Standards Tests, you will see that most grades scored above average on all courses. Only a couple of subjects were below state average. It is always a good idea to take a tour of the school before enrolling your child just to make sure you like the school and the way the school is ran.
