Alain Leroy Locke Charter High School Review

Alain Leroy Locke Charter High School today known as Ánimo Locke Charter High School 3 is a part of the Green Dot Public Schools. The school originally opened in 1967, but in 2007 voted to give the control of Locke High School to Green Dot Public Schools and at that time became a charter school. In 2008, the school reopened with six college prep schools, which are commonly referred to as Locke Family of High Schools. The college prep curriculum helps students prepare for their remaining years of school after graduating high school. The focus of the school is to prepare students for college more than it is for joining the workforce.

Along with core subjects, Alain Leroy Locke Charter High School offers extra curricular activities, sports, and student clubs which include drama, sculpture, chorus, photography, band, film production, orchestra, computer arts, dance, drawing, baseball, basketball, football, cross country, physical education classes, softball, soccer, tennis, ultimate Frisbee, rock climbing, track, volleyball, debate, science & technology, yearbook, multimedia, newspaper, and student government. The school also offers vocational programs including automotive, agriculture, health careers, professional child care, technology, law enforcement, and food service.

Parents expressed their concern over the reputation the school had previously which has put a cloud over the school. The school is not what it use to be and today students are learning and doing quite well. The school has made quite a few improvements, which includes providing a safe and nurturing learning environment with a quality curriculum, and caring knowledgeable teachers that help students achieve their goals. Some parents explained they would like to see more parent involvement but that the teachers and staff are very nice and work well with students.

State test scores were below average in most grade levels and most core subjects.

With the test scores not being available or being below state average it would be best if you took a tour of the school and learned more about the curriculum prior to enrolling your child.
