The Mendelian Model of Inheritance

  • Mendel worked out his laws of inheritance in a monastery garden in the late 1800s. Without knowing about the complexities of meiosis and diploid organisms, Mendel developed laws about gene inheritance that are as fundamental to genetics as the laws of gravity are to physics.

  • In this Lesson, we'll learn about Mendel’s basic principles of inheritance. We’ll explore the breeding experiments that Mendel performed with pea plants, and we’ll use statistical analysis to understand the probabilities involved in Mendelian inheritance.

  • We’ll also discover how Mendel’s laws can be applied to predict the inheritance of human traits today.
