Biology and Biologists

  • Biology is the scientific study of living organisms. That may sound simple, until we start to think about the vast number of organisms that inhabit planet Earth. When we also consider the interactions among organisms, and between an organism and its environment, it becomes clear that a lot of information can be classified as biological.

  • How is biological information acquired, and by whom? We'll discover the answers to these questions as we begin to explore how biologists do their work.

  • We'll also see how the field of biology is divided into subfields that allow for specialization. Collaboration among specialists in many fields is critical for solving many of today's complex biological problems.
